Atonement, Day of
In Hebrew, Yom Kippur, a day of rest and fasting to give space for atoning for the sins of the past year. On this day, the tenth of the seventh month (Lev. 23:27–32), and this day only, the high priest went with incense to the Holy of Holies in the Temple. A bullock was slaughtered and its blood was sprinkled on the mercy seat. Two goats were provided; one was chosen by lot for a sacrifice on behalf of the nation. On the other the high priest laid his hands, thereby transferring symbolically the nation's sins on to the scapegoat which was then released into the wilderness. This symbolism is used to explain the sacrifice of Christ, in Heb. 8 and 9.
